Mother’s Day provides an occasion to express our gratitude for the godly women who love the Lord and others. If you have a godly woman like this in your life, you are blessed. If you have a godly mother like this, you are doubly blessed.
In Jesus’ most well-known sermon, often called the Sermon on the Mount, he began by expressing a list of blessings, or beatitudes. The list he gave does not describe how to earn a relationship with God because it is impossible to earn eternal life by human effort. It must be received as the gracious gift of God that it is. Rather, Jesus reveals what it looks like to live in the right relationship with God. Religion changes external behavior but the right relationship with God changes us from the inside out. That’s why Jesus begins this sermon with this list of beatitudes which are all internal qualities that create external transformation.
Christian moms need encouragement from God’s Word. Consider some pertinent applications to godly mothers based on each beatitude.
Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Blessed is the mother who depends on God to restore her soul and who does not try to earn righteousness.
Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”
Blessed is the mother who runs to the feet of Jesus when she is burdened and weeping for her family.
Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
Blessed is the mother who picks up her kids’ stuff after putting them to bed. She remembers this life is fleeting and one day she will be in eternity.
Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”
Blessed is the mother who realizes that her greatest fulfillment will come from walking closely with Jesus.
Matthew 5:7 “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.”
Blessed is the mother who is a channel of Christ’s compassion and mercy to others around her.
Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”
Blessed is the mother whose life is transformed from the inside out by the holiness of God.
Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”
Blessed is the mother who lives at peace with God and others.
Matthew 5:10 “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven.”
Blessed is the mother who decides to fellowship with God every day and to have her family in church every Sunday as she ignores the pulls to pursue lesser things and the criticism of others for her priorities.
Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and say all manner of
evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven:
for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”
Blessed is the mother who finds her joy in the Lord despite the criticism she receives for following Jesus.
Remember that you are not the only one being criticized. Remember that your brothers and sisters in Christ are standing with you. You are in good company.
Your family will be better for watching you stand strong. Most importantly, God notices your decision to follow Him and you will be blessed for all eternity in His presence!
